England’s desperate first breakthrough in the final session came when Skipper Graeme Smith (23) missed a horrendous sweep shot off Graeme Swann to find himself trapped lbw. Smith put up 46 runs for the first wicket with Petersen in 21.5 overs. The second wicket for England came when Alviro Petersen (24) was given lbw to a Stuart Broad delivery which straightened to beat a flick shot.

Hashim Amlahe hosts then had to wait almost till the fag end of the day’s play to find their next success but by then South Africa got through a solid stand of 81 runs for the 3rd wicket. Jacques Kallis (31) was the man to be dismissed when he was hurried by a pacy inducker from Steven Finn which had him lbw. South Africa went to Stumps at 145 for 3 in 50 overs.

Update at Tea on Day 3: South Africa are off to a fine start of 33 for no loss in 15 overs after bowling out England for 315. The hosts added 38 useful runs in the post lunch session for the last two wickets to clinch a slender lead of 6 runs. Steyn got rid of James Anderson by forcing him to fend a nasty lifter to slips and then Morne Morkel wrapped up things when last man Steven Finn drove him uppishly to cover point. Graeme Swann remained unbeaten with a crucial 37* (from 53 balls with 4 fours).

For the Proteas, Morkel and Steyn finished with four wickets each. Vernon Philander, who wasn’t fully fit could take two wickets.

Update at Lunch on Day 3: England went to Lunch on Day 3 with a disappointing 277 for 8. Overnight batsman Johnny Bairstow missed out on his maiden Test century narrowly by 5 runs. It was a productive morning session for the Proteas with the second new ball delivering them three wickets.

Infact, the second new ball straighaway produced results with overnight batsman Matt Prior (27) edging the very first ball with it from Vernon Philander into the slips with a false drive. A while after that, England lost Stuart Broad (16) fending off a rising delivery from Dale Steyn to shortleg.

By the lunch break, England saw Jonny Bairstow get bowled playing all around a length ball from Morne Morkel in a flick shot. Bairstow was dejected as he got out on 95 (which came from 196 balls with 13 fours). England had a poor session with 69 runs scored off 25 overs at the loss of three wickets.
