England crushed New Zealand by 40 runs in their opening T20I at the tiny Eden Park Ground in Auckland. The visitors took the game away by piling up a huge total of 214 for 7 after they were asked to bat first by Brendon McCullum. The decision from McCullum simply backfired and though none of the English batsmen got past a fifty, each of them had done significant damage by smashing a total of 15 sixes! Luke Wright hit four of them in his 20-ball 42. Eoin Morgan was the top scorer with 46 from 26 balls.

New Zealand never threatened to reach the target of 215 and were restricted to 174 for 9. Martin Guptill top scored with 44 (from 32 balls) while none of the other batsmen got going. Steven Finn took 3 for 39 and Stuart Broad took a career best of 4 for 24. Luke Wright finished with a perfect all-round show with his 2 for 29 to back up his clean hitting.
