Format

The 2010 edition moved back to India, and was held from March 12 to April 25. A total of eight teams featured in the event. The tournament continued to be held in a double round robin format followed by the knock out stage. The strategic time out was also retained with a variation – each innings had two strategic time outs of two and a half minutes each.

Super Chennai Kings

Chennai Super Kings began the 2010 edition on a losing note, going down to Deccan Chargers by 31 runs in the opener. It did not take long for them to get back on track as they defeated KKR by 55 runs. MS Dhoni was the star of the show with his unbeaten 66 from 33 balls. They went on to beat Delhi by 5 wickets; Matthew Hayden’s 93 from 43 balls allowing them to chase down 186. They tied the game against Punjab chasing 136 but lost out in the eliminator. Chennai lost to Bangalore as well, failing to chase 172.

Chennai’s losing streak continued as they were defeated by Mumbai by 5 wickets and lost to Rajasthan by 17 runs. In the return game against Bangalore, they came back on track. Chasing 162, Murali Vijay’s 78 from 39 guided them home. Chennai went on to beat Rajasthan as well. Vijay once again starred with 127 from 58 as CSK won by 23 runs. They beat Mumbai by 24 runs as Ashwin and Thilan Thushara’s two-fors helped them defend 165.

Chennai were undone by Deccan Chargers by six wickets before spanking KKR by 9 wickets. Ashwin’s 3 for 16 was the standout effort. They lost to Delhi by six wickets, but finished the round robin stage on a high, beating Punjab by six wickets. Dhoni’s 54 from 29 balls enabled them to chase down 193 with ease.

The knockout stage

In the second semi-final of the event, Chennai faced Deccan Chargers. Batting first, they were restricted to 142. However, Doug Bollinger’s super bowling effort of 4 for 13 kept Deccan down to 104. In the final, Chennai came up against tough opponents Mumbai. Chennai batted first and Raina’s unbeaten 57 from 35 balls took them to 168. In spite of Tendulkar’s 48, Mumbai were restricted to 146.

Star performers

Suresh Raina scored 520 runs from 16 games at a strike rate of 143 with four fifties

Murali Vijay notched up 458 runs from 15 games at a strike rate of 157 with one hundred and two fifties.

Ravichandran Ashwin had the best economy rate among all bowlers who sent down at least 25 overs. He featured in 12 games and sent down 48 overs at an economy rate of 6.1 with 13 wickets at a strike rate of 22.
